Rhoda is the latest creation of award-winning restaurateur and founder of Jia Group Yenn Wong, and Nate Green, most recently executive chef of the Hong Kong’s 22 Ships and Ham & Sherry. Designed by internationally renowned designer Joyce Wang, Rhoda’s interior is a celebration of Green’s style of cooking, which revolves around the charcoal grill. The space features a range of subtle references, from a charcoal wood-cladding Shou Sugi Ban on the walls, to rose motifs branded into the wood tables. In the main dining room, the chef’s open kitchen bar and cocktail bar face one another, literally putting food and drink centre stage, for dramatic and theatrical effect.
Paying homage to family meal-times and the fading custom of conversation over a good meal, a communal table is placed at the heart of the restaurant. The vision is to bring back family and group dining moments and is also reflected on Rhoda’s crockery choice designed and handmade by local Hong Kong ceramics company Flow Plus.
RHODA features a daily changing menu featuring local ingredients in western style to create simple modern comfort food. Most of the dishes are cooked over charcoal grill, giving them a smoky touch which enhances the flavour.
And keeping it in the family Rhoda’s curated wine list has been selected by Green’s brother, Adam Green. Featuring affordable wines and unusual and unique vineyards alongside a pick of vintage and ever-popular labels including ‘Wine on Tap’ as well as an English Sparkling Wine.
To encourage diners to try their unique selection, all the wines on the menu are available by the glass, carafe or bottle.
At the bar, a great selection of carefully chosen craft beers and ciders, Japanese sake, bourbons and whisky’s pair perfectly with Chef Nate’s dishes. A collection of forgotten drinks such as Port, Madeira and Calvados completes the extensive bar menu.
Beside the bar is ‘The Barber Room’, is a unique room for drinks or dining for six people, with shaving brushes on the wall and a suspended light box featuring a collection of Green’s favourite vintage tattoo flash art, designed to reflect his personal style.
CEO and Founder of Jia Group, Yenn Wong says, “Nate’s talent for creating simple, unique dishes was clear from the outset. I love working with people who have great passion for what they do and I don’t think you can find two more passionate people than Nate and designer Joyce Wang. It has been tremendous working with them on this project and we are all super-excited about introducing Rhoda to Hong Kong diners.”
