Hundreds of thirsty wine lovers have descended on the Hong Kong Convention & Exhibition Centre to preview the best wines for the coming season, and try their hand at being a wine judge, as part of the three-day ‘Test Your Palate’ wine tasting event.
Held in conjunction with Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition’s official annual judging week, Test Your Palate shares the day’s competition wines – some 350+ wines per day – with the wine-loving public, and features fun challenges like guessing the eventual trophy winning wines, picking wine faults, blind tasting and more.
Debra Meiburg, Master of Wine and founding director of the Cathay Pacific HKIWSC commented, “This is such a fun event each year, drawing adventurous aficionados, curious beginners and full-blown wine geeks alike.
“The Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition has long been regarded as the benchmark for identifying and awarding quality wine in Asia best suited to Asian tastes. Given our Asian-only judging panel and selection of unique Asia-focused award categories, the results are always hotly anticipated by the food and wine loving public and professionals in the region.”
On hand to offer tasting tips and advice was international wine judge, Patrick Materman, chief winemaker of Brancott Estate in New Zealand, along with judges from 12 Asian cities.
Nathan Tuck, a Macau resident and wine enthusiast said, “This is my second year at the event, and I love it, and even travel from Macau to attend! My top pick was a California cabernet. The diversity, self-service set-up and relaxed atmosphere make it my favourite wine tasting event of the year.”
Results of the Cathay Pacific Hong Kong International Wine & Spirit Competition will be announced at a gala awards ceremony and dinner, held on 10 November, on the opening night of the Hong Kong International Wine & Spirits Fair.
